Launch "Den Haag" on the 4th April 1925, at the shipyard of Friedrich Krupp A.G. Germaniawerft, Kiel (469).

Scheepsbouw.
De Germaina-werf te Kiel heeft thans 7 motorschepen op stapel staan, welke in verschillende stadia van afwerking zijn doch alle vóór het einde van 1925 gereed zullen komen. Drie dezer schepen van 12.000 ton d.w. elk, zijn in op-dracht gegeven door de Deutsch-Amerikanische Petroleum Gesellschaft te Hamburg en het eerste dezer drie schepen zal onder den naam "Den Haag" onder Nederlandsche vlag varen en uitgerust worden met twee Krupp Germania motoren van 1400 p.k. elk. De andere vier schepen zijn door buitenlandsche firma's in opbracht gegeven en wel een zusterschip van "Den Haag", dat den naam "Rotterdam" zal voeren, voor rekening van de Petroleum In-dustrie Mij.

De olietanker ms. 'Den Haag' (1925) van de Petroleum Industrie Maatschappij (PIM), op weg van New York naar
Rotterdam volgeladen met olie, onder kapitein C. Wijker, wordt als neutraal Nederlands schip op de Atlantische
Oceaan circa 150 mijl ten noorden van Quessant, door de Duitse onderzeeboot 'U 48' getorpedeerd. 26
opvarenden komen hierbij om het leven.

The Dutch motor tanker Den Haag was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-48 on February
15th, 1940,150 miles N.N.W. of Ushant, homeward bound to Rotterdam, loaded. Twenty-six lives
were lost.

Notes on loss: At 14.00 hours on 15 Feb, 1940, the Den Haag (Master C. Wijker) was torpedoed and sunk by U-48. The 13
survivors in one lifeboat were picked up by the British steam merchant Glen Orchy. The other lifeboats with bodies were
later found adrift and some bodies were washed ashore on the French coast.

De MT "Den Haag" was op 15 ferbruari 1940 tijdens de neutraliteitsperiode het eerste oorlogsverlies.

Men lost from U-boats :
Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-48 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.
