FOUR POLAR BEARS AT SEA
The New York Times, January 8, 1900, Monday

Drifting on an Iceberg Sighted Off the Newfoundland Banks.

BALTIMORE, Jan. 7,
Capt. Eckhoff of the Dutch oil tank steamship "La Hesbaye", in port from Rotterdam, tells of an interesting sight he witnessed on the voyage to Baltimore.
When his ship was off the Newfoundland Banks a few days ago a large iceberg was sighted, and as the vessel drew nearer four large polar bears were seen walking about on a flat portion of its surface. They doubtless had been caught on it when it  became detached from the glacier of which it was once a part in the Arctic regions. Capt. Eckhoff did not stop his ship to get a shot at the bears. They doubtless will drown when the berg drifts into the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and melts.
