DUTCH SHIP, AMERICAN CAPTAIN, SUNK

Vice Consul Kroh at Rotterdam, advised the State Department tonight of the sinking by gunfire from a German submarine of the Dutch tank steamship La Campine, with an American Captain, Gustav Claude, on March 13, in the North Sea safety zone. The crew was saved. The dispatch follows:
Dutch tank steamship La Campine of Rotterdam, owned hy American Petroleum Company, en route Rotterdam to New York with water ballast, Gustav Claude, Captain, (American) reported stopped by gunfire and sunk by gunfire by German submarine March 13 in North Sea safe zone; latitude, 56 north; longitude, 2,5 degrees east. Entire crew, twenty-six hours in life-boats, saved.

Washingtcn, March 23. - The state department has been advised by Vice-Consul Kroh, at Rotterdam, that a German submarine sank by gunfire the Dutch tank steamer "La Campine", whose Captain, Gustav Claude, was an Ameri-can. All of the crew were saved.
