TRIALS S.S. “ESSO RALEIGH”

The ESSO RALEIGH, Hull 371, secondtanker from this Yard for the Standard Oil C0., left the Yard at 4:00 A. M. June 20, 1940, for
her Official Sea Trial. Capt. Roger Williams was in charge for the Yard with Capt. Posey on the bridge.
After passing Cape Henry about 7:00 A. M. the vessel proceeded to sea toward Chesapeake Light Vessel for compass adjustment. Upon completion of the compass adjustment the vessel worked up to full power and made two speed runs in the open sea between Chesapeake Light Vessel and Winter Quarter Light Vessel, a distance of about 67.5 miles. On the run south a speed of 19.22 knots was made at about 14,500 S. H. P.
The average speed of the two runs was 18.61 knots, Which meant that the contract speed requirements were easily met. The runs were completed about 4 :45 P. M. and the ahead and astern steering tests were then made. The anchor windlass test off Cape Henry was completed about 7:00 P. M., and the vessel then proceeded towards the Shipyard, arriving about 8 :50 P. M.
All trial equipment Was removed during the night and the vessel was delivered to the Owners next morning. It sailed about 10 :00 A. M.
