Esso Jurong - (1981-1994)
ESSO JURONG GET's A FACELIFT
Source : Esso Singapore News June 1982.
After more than one year of successful operation, our newest vessel, the ESSO JURONG sailed into Malaysia Shipyard and Engineering (MSE), Johore on May 10th for her guarantee docking.
Guarantee docking refers to the first dry-docking, normally one year after vessel's delivery, during which structural defects and defects of machinery and equipment are rectified by the shipbuilder at no cost to us.

Laying on blocks in MSE‘s no. 2 drydock, the relatively small 5449 dwt vessel was dwarfed by the giant 150,000 dwt capacity drydock.
Shipyard workers were everywhere — in the dock. on deck, and in the engine room, each carrying out a repair job he was specialized to do.
Superintendent Engineer Han Chwee Juan was in the dock busy supervising the repairs and giving instructions. With him were an engineer from Shimoda Dockyard Co Ltd of Japan, Mr. Ryuji Sugazaki and the Master of the vessel, Captain Magnaterra.
The ESSO JURONG was built by Shimoda Dockyard and delivered in February 1981. She was designed to transport clean
petroleum products from the Pulau Ayer Chawan and Port Dickson refineries to various ports in Malaysia and Thalland. Occasionally she calls at ports as far as Bombay.
Superintendent Han stopped to explain, “The vessel's performance during the past year had been generally satisfactory except
for severe vibrations in her pump-room. Her sistership the ESSO TUMASIK which was built by the same shipyard also had a similar problem which was rectified during her guarantee docking last September, also at MSE.”
“Shimoda had accepted the overhauling of all four cargo pumps under their guarantee."
With a small torch in his hand, he went into the pumproom to inspect the repairs. ”To reduce vibration and noise level of the cargo
pumps and platform, the areas around the foundation of the cargo pumps are filled up with cement, and the second platform reinforced by installing brackets and welding on gratings."
"Other repairs in the pump-room which are under guarantee include valves and alternate piping similar to that of the ESSO TUMASIK.
"Other guarantee repairs include the installation of a sound-proof booth for the telephone near the Engine Control Room, installation of pipe fenders in four places of the forecastle deck and the poop deck to improve the mooring arrangement, and the checking of the main engine remote control system.”
"The repairs under our account include the installation of platforms for landing of lifeboat for both the port and starboard sides,
installations of openings to the port and starboard slop tanks for access to tank washing, and a new sludge line into the starboard sloptank from engine room bi|ges.”
On the performance of the yard he said, "l am quite satisfied with the performance generally. In particular, their paint-work and piping are quite good. Yet their prices are quite competitive. MSE won this repairs award through stiff competition from local yards.”
After undergoing repairs and getting two new coats of paint in the drydock for one week, the vessel was shifted to a wharf for another three days of afloat repairs.
The repairs were completed on schedule and she sailed from MSE on the morning of May 20th and anchored herself at the Eastern Petroleum Anchorage in the afternoon awaiting her next orders.
lt will be another 30 months of plying the seas of Southeast Asia and other distant oceans before she will go for her next drydocking.
