THE ESSO NEW YORK, NEWEST OF ELEVEN SUPER TANKERS SERVING IN THE ESSO WORLD-WIDE OCEAN-GOING FLEET. IS SHOWN HERE AS SHE ARRIVED IN NEW YORK ON HER MAIDEN VOYAGE TODAY (MAY 1).
OWNED AND OPERATED BY THE ESSO SHIPPING COMPANY, AFFILIATE OF STANDARD OIL COMPANY (NEW JERSEY).
THE ESSO NEW YORK WAS LAUNCHED FEBRUARY 9, AT THE NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING AND DRY DOCK COMPANY, NEWPORT NEWS, VA. THE TANKER IS REGISTERED UNDER THE UNITED STATES FLAG. THE ESSO NEW YORK HAS A CARGO OIL TANK CAPACITY OF 230,000 BARRELS, OR BETTER THAN 9,600,000 GALLONS OF OIL; A SERVICE SPEED OF ABOUT 16 KNOTS; AND A DEADWEIGHT OF 26,000 TONS.
HER LENGTH IS 628 FEET OVERALL. SHE HAS 82 FEET SIX INCHES OF MOULDED BEAM, 42 FEET SIX INCHES OF MOULDED DEPTH TO THE UPPER DECK AND 31 FEET 11 1/4 INCHES DRAFT.
THE SHIP HAS A SINGLE SCREW DRIVEN BY A HIGH PRESSURE GEARED STEAM TURBINE CAPABLE OF DEVELOPING 12,500 SHAFT HORSE POWER AT 112 REVOLUTIONS A MINUTE.
