On December 14, 1956, the shipyard obtained a contract for five 48,800 DWT tankers from an old customer, the Standard Oil C0. of NJ, for service with the Esso Standard Division of Humble Oil & Refining Co. These ships were assigned Hull Nos. 540-544 but
only the first two, named ESSO BALTTMORE and ESSO BOSTON, were built.
The keel for ESSO BALTIMORE was not laid on Shipway 8 until September 9, 1959, due to the press of other tanker work at the shipyard. Sponsor for ESSO BALTIMORE was Mrs. Morgan J. Davis, wife of the president of Humble Oil & Refining Co., and she sent the giant tanker down the ways on April 28. 1960, amid great fanfare.
During outfitting, it became apparent that this ship and her sister represented a departure from previous Esso tankers, for they featured modern streamlined stacks and superstructures; offered individual air conditioned quarters; and lacked the traditional forward dry cargo hold and booms formerly provided. ESSO BALTIMORE’s 19,000 SHP Newport News-built turbines were put to the test during sea  trials on July 11-12, 1960, and the ship was delivered on July 15.
She sailed later that day for Baltimore and an open house which drew 17,000 vistors. She then sailed for New York and joined the Esso fleet after another successful open house there. Designed to be the largest and most efficient oil tanker able to operate in the Gulf Coast-East Coast trade, her 35 cargo tanks gave her a total capacity of 417,842 U.S. barrels.
She stayed on her intended routes for almost 20 years until her operation in competition with landbased pipelines became unprofitable in the late 19705.
Her name was changed to EXXON BALTIMORE in 1973, and her later operator was the Exxon Shipping Co. After her withdrawal from her original route, she was converted for the carriage of Hondo crude from Santa Barbara to Baytown via the Panama Canal,
where she served with four of her Newport News sisters into the mid-1980's. In 1985 she was reclassified as a products ship and, fitted with heating coils, began to carry heavy fuels and asphalt cargoes.
