Steel inspector joining the "Esso Skandia" at Durban just after Christmas 1981. We joined in Las Palmas - he had left in
Sierra Leone, done a ship for French Esso, had Christmas at home, collected a box of good wine to bring back to us in
Durban and here is the helicopter landing. Note the colour on deck - not all oxide red !!!
This was the survey where we found that even though the "Esso Skandia" was 11 years old she needed a new bottom -
1130 tons of steel, later reduced to 450 tons.
