Federal Shipbuilding Launches Big Tankers
The third of three fast nationaldefense featured tankers, which the Federal -Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, United .States, Steel subsidiary, is building for the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, was launched off the Kearney Yards at 2:20 p. m., November 4th. (1939).
The vessel was christened Esso Trenton by Mrs. Clara Esselborn mother of Mr. Herman J. Esselborn,  manager of the Operations Division, Marine Department, Standard Oil Company of New Jersey.
Esso Trenton has an over-all length of 553 feet, a deadweight capacity of over 18.000 tons at summer freeboard draft, an oil carrying capacity of over 6,000,000 gallons, and a radius of action of about 12,000
miles. One of the fastest tankers of its type, the vessel is capable of service speed in excess of 18 knots at sea.
The Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company has also under contract two smaller Federal type 13 knot tankers for the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey.  It is expected that they will launched later this year.
