 "Excelsior" was build in 1894.

The New York Times, February 22, 1916, Tuesday

The "Petrolite" was attacked by a submarine Dec. 6 about 350 miles west of Alexandria and just south of the east end
of the Island of Crete. The vessel belonged to the Standard Oil Company and had been in commission since April 14.
1915. The attacking submarine, according to a report made by the United States cruiser "Dea Molnes", carried an Austrian
flag, and one man was wounded on the "Petrolite" by an exploding shell fired bv the submarine. An affidavit made by
Captain Thompson, the master of the "Petrolite", declared that fourteen shots were fired at the "Petrolite", one of which
crashed into the engine room and injured a seaman, and, that the submarine commander took one of the "Petrolite's"
crew aboard the auttmarlne and held him as hostage while he obtained provisions from the steamer.
