Ship History
Built for Standard Oil of New Jersey, American flag, in 1919 and named George H. Jones. Generally Tampico,
Mexico to New York and other US ports service.
Torpedoed U455 on Aruba to Ardossan, with cargo fuel oil in 1942.

Notes on loss:
At 05.26 hours on 11 Jun, 1942, the Geo H. Jones (Master Frederick James Hewlett), a straggler from convoy SL-111,
was torpedoed and sunk by U-455 north-northeast of the Azores. The master and 19 survivors were picked up by the
British sloop HMS Lulworth (Y 60) (LtCdr C. Gwinner) and landed at Freetown. 20 others were picked up by the
British minesweeper HMS Orissa (J 200) (Lt D. Whyte) and landed at Londonderry. Among the survivors were
two passengers. One crew member and one gunner were lost.
