Keel laid 08-09-1941. Launched 24-01-1942. Completed 04-05-1942. Gr. 9930 t., Net. 5928 t., Dw. 15850 t. L.o.a. 159,57 m., Br. 20,78 m., Dr. 9,19 m. Engine: 2 steam turbines, manufactured by Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company, Milwaukee. 12000 B.h.p., 8808 kW. Speed 15 knots. 26 tanks.
History:
COLINA-1942 completed for Socony-Vacuum Oil Company, New York, U.S.A.
COLINA-1942 acquired by the Navy, 31 March.
COLINA-1942 commissioned USS Kankakee (AO-39), 4 May.
AO-39 KANKAKEE-1946 assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service (NOTS), 26 February.
AO-39 KANKAKEE-1949 assigned to the Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS), 1 October.
AO-39 KANKAKEE-1955 decommissioned, 30 November1955, at Philadelphia, PA., and laid up in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet.
AO-39 KANKAKEE-1956 recommissioned, 20 December and assigned to MSTS.
AO-39 KANKAKEE-1957 decommissioned, 4 November, at New York, N.Y., struck from the Naval Register, transferred to the Maritime Administration (MARAD), 21 November, for lay up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet, Beaumont, TX.
AO-39 KANKAKEE-1959 deacquired and placed in reserve, 1 February 1959
AO-39 KANKAKEE-1961 recommissioned, 29 November at New Orleans.LA.
AO-39 KANKAKEE-1968 decommissioned, transferred to the Maritime Administration, 27 November, for lay up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet, James River Group, Lee Hall, VA.
