Lubchem, ex Mobil Lubchem 1991
LOA 306' 11/2"; Beam 46'; Draught 17'7"
3252 SDWT
Built 1973 by Cantabrico and Riera at Gijon, Spain. Powered by a Deutz 8-cylinder H170S DE7 engine developing 2400HP.
Originally named MOBIL LUBCHEM.
This is a product tanker fitted with 10 cargo tanks and 10 deepwell pumps capable of complete segregation of 10 product grades.
The ballast is carried in double bottom tanks.
Owned by Mobil Shipping Company Limited, and managed by Stephenson Clarke (Shipping) Limited, this vessel is used almost
exclusively for the carriage of lube oil base stocks from Coryton, England, and Gravenchon, France, to northwest European blending
plants at Birkenhead (England), Rotterdam (Holland) and Wedel (Germany).
In 1974, she was struck by Polyglory in the River Seine, France, while sailing outbound from Gravenchon. Polyglory made impact around
number four tank; her bow slid down the side of Mobil Lubchem demolishing her starboard bridge wing and the master's day room. There
were no casualties. The vessel returned to Gravenchon, discharged her cargo then proceeded to Le Havre on the north coast of France
for repairs.
In 1991, Captain Lance Ball, Lubchem's master since 1973, received an MBE from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace for services
to shipping.
