Eclipse
LOA 587 '6 "; Beam 82 '6 "; Depth 4 2'6 "
25,200 DWT; 207,162 bbls
De Laval turbines, cross-compound, double reduction gears, developing 13,500SHP at 100RPM plus 10% continuous overload
Launched 23 December 1953 at Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company, Chester, Pennsylvania, and commissioned in March 1954.
Eclipse was the first supertanker to join the US-flag fleet, and the third vessel to bear the name.
This Eclipse evolved from the design of wapello, an earlier supertanker placed under the holding ownership of our Panamanian
marine subsidiary, Brilliant Transportation Company. In turn, wapello had evolved from the sovac supertankers, withsome minor
changes dictated by experience.
This Eclipse differed from both in that it was shorter by the length of one cargo tank. This change was made to tailor eclipse for
service on the eastern seaboard of the US, particularly in view of the Hudson River requirements.
