Eclipse
LOA 500 '1 "; Beam 65 '9 "; Depth 37 '
15.027 DWT; 119,284 bbls
Launched 30 June and commissioned 25 August 1931 at Scotts Shipbuilding and Engine Company, Greenock, Scotland.
While the US-flag brilliant, comet and daylight were being built in the US, eclipse was being constructed in Scotland to
the same hull dimensions and general plan.
In January 1941, Eclipse was requisitioned for WWII service, entering transatlantic convoy work from Aruba, Netherlands Antil-
les, to the UK. On 4 May 1942, just off Boynton Beach, Florida, Eclipse was torpedoed and badly damaged, but not sunk.
Captain George Legg took her into Fort Lauderdale. Later she was towed to Mobile, Alabama, and repaired, using an undamaged
boiler from java arrow, in Mobile at the same time and for the same reason. Two men lost their lives in this torpedo attack.
eclipse came home from the war in January 1946, to work out of the Persian Gulf for Europe and the Mediterranean until laid up
for lack of demand in 1949. In December 1949 she was sold to Compania de Navigacion, Cristobal, Panama.
She was renamed Ionian Skipper by her new owners.
