ACME - 1901

Steel 4-masted barque LOA 332' Beam 45' Depth 26' 3288 gross tons 135,000 cases
Launched 1901, at Arthur Sewall's yard, Bath, Maine, where she was built at a cost of $190,000. ACME left Bath in July 1901,
headed for New York to pick up her first load.
The famous race between this ship and the British-flag BRILLIANT was talked about for decades after it took place. Both were in New York with full cargoes for Yokohama, Japan. Betting ran high. BRILLIANT was commanded by Captain Cowlishaw, who was not exactly a runt at 5'7". But ACME's skipper, Captain Lawrence, scraped the overhead at 7'2" - and around the New York office in those days they were known as the "long and short of it". In spite of steering gear trouble, BRILLIANT won the race, whereupon she was immediately challenged to race back. She won again. As a result the phrase "long and short of it" took on a time as well as a height dimension.
The available records have foiled all attempts to discover the time and manner of acme's disposal
