Argon - 1920
LOA 435 ' Beam 56 ' Depth 33 '6 ", 10,770 DWT, 76,281 bbls Triple expansion engine 48" stroke 2600 IHP.
Launched 27 December 1919 at Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, Sparrows Point, Maryland.
Argon was the second of the "A" boats, built to the plans of Acme, with three more to follow.
Argon carried out coastal sea trials, then departed to service our foreign markets all over the globe.
Upon recall in 1930 she settled down on the US east coast and remained there until requisitioned by WSA in April 1942 for WW II service. Although she sailed in transatlantic convoys and supported the US amphibious landings on North Africa, she encountered no enemy action and escaped the perils of a hostile sea.
In February 1944, she was turned over to the government as part of a barter which brought us two new tankers for four old ones. However, Argon remained under operation of Socony-Vacuum through War Emergency Tankers Incorporated until the end of the war, when she was returned to the government and anchored with the surplus fleet on the James River in Virginia.
