Severe Fire - Severe damage to unfinished tanker.
(From our Rotterdam correspondent) Numerous firefighters fought a fire in Rotterdam on Saturday afternoon in the tanker JACOB VEROLME, which measures in the stern of the 26,500-tonne tanker, which ship is being completed at a ship installation company of the Verolme group on the Oostdijk in Rotterdam. The JACOB VEROLME has recently been mainly in the news because of the special measures that had to be taken for the launching in the narrow Noord at Alblasserdam. Despite the resolute intervention, much damage was still done, but it was possible to prevent the fire from gaining a foothold more towards the center of the so beautiful ship. The cause of the fire must be sought in the overheating of a container with mastic, which was in the cold store. In that room were sheets of cork for insulation purposes and wooden partitions.

Final Fate:
The JACOB VEROLME, used alternately for the transport of crude oil and ore, had arrived in Buenos Aires on January 4th, 1967 with 21076 tons of crude oil. After unloading, the ship sailed to Vitoria (Brazil), from where she departed on January 12th, 1967 at 3.30 pm with 25,200 tons of lump iron ore, destined for IJmuiden. During welding work on the bow on January 22nd,  1967, at 9.20 am, a heavy explosion took place in hold 1 cargo tank I had burst apart. The JACOB VEROLME made water quickly and heeled over to port. Which had already increased to 25 - 30º at 10.30 am, and 40 people on board were already in the boats by then. One man was missing and must have died in the explosion. At 11:00 that day, the JACOB VEROLME capsized and surfaced with the plane. The disaster occurred on 27º06' NB and 20º08'  WL. As early as 2.30pm that day, the 40 survivors were rescued by the Polish passenger ship BATORY. The wreck was later taken in tow by two tugs, including the Dutch ZWARTE ZEE, but since the costs of salvage and recovery were higher than the insured value of the ship already abandoned to underwriters, the JACOB VEROLME was taken over by salvage experts on March 6th, 1967. Sunk 12 miles from Las Palmas in position 27 Palma 36' N and 15º48' W with dynamite. It concerns a case of gross negligence on the part of the captain, who had allowed welding work while there was probably still gas in the tank. He was given a six-month disqualification.
