Former Master of the "Galp Funchal", John Spooner,  wrote to me :
I joined the SS Indiana as master for the new Portuguese owners Sacor Maritima - employed by Dorchester
Maritime who were to manage the ship for them for 12 months while their senior engineers got steam time
 on 2nd march 1995 @ Singapore anchorage.
The ship was a mess left by the full Greek crew - many things just left unrepaired & in a general filthy state.
Before doing a major docking we had to hand clean all the cargo tanks using 200 Malaysians who lived on the
poop for 3 weeks!
The dockyard would not accept the ship if they were not satisfied she was clean & gas free because the previous
docking there had been a tank explosion that killed several people.  Our crew other than myself were - UK Chief
Eng. Indian 2nd Eng. & Ch. Mate, Polish engineers, electrician, R.O, & deck officers + crew from Sierra Leone. A
more competant 1st Eng. & a 4th Eng. with steam experience joined a bit later.
With tug escort we managed to get round to eastern Singapore for Jahore pilot with half ahead revs. max.
Did full class surveys & got most things working including some boiler repairs.  Ch. Eng. could not get steam up one
one of the boilers, so we left for western anchorage again with tug escort.  He then told me we would not reach Sri
Lanka before running out of water!
Portugese directors flew out to confur with their 2 Ch.eng. & 2 masters that were in Singapore having a great time in
a hotel while we looked after the ship.
Our Ch.Eng. was made boiler super. & they employed 2 companies to repair boilers & coat bottoms of tanks that were
in poor condition.  Then another transit of Singapore Straits - as we made our way back to the dockyard @ Sembawang.
Finally left on 15th July for Kharg Island, Iran - with only one short engine stop on the way. The loading time is a story in
itself. Departing the Gulf we landed the exhausted Ch. Eng. & some others & picked up an additional deck mate as the
Ch. off was spending all his time in the pumproom trying to undo many years of Greek abuse.
Suffered heavy weather damage rounding South Africa when a 3 metre wave rolled across the deck - knocking off
its supports the after end of the fore & aft electrical & hydraulic trunking. Nothing broke suprisingly.
I left when we got to Sines Portugal in September.  My first VLCC & what a nightmare - but tempered by a great time
in Singapore & meeting my new wife to be.
Best regards, John Spooner
