Building the "Melania (2)" Part 1

Tanker, yardnumber 535, 1968. Builder , Nederlandse Dok- & Scheepsbouw Maatschappij, Amsterdam, Holland.
Client: Shell Tankers U.K. Ltd. Londen, United Kingdom.
Dimensions: Length over all: 325.32 meter, length pp: 309.81 meter, Beam: 47.17 meter, depth: 24.50 meter.
Summerdraft: 18.99 meter. DWT: 213.360 ton. Content permanent ballast tanks: 36973 m³. Sea trails at summer draught
and max speed. Power 15.4 nautical miles. Turbine installation: a high and a low pressure turbine in heat-stable AtlanticLaval,
type APG 36/27. Max. continuous power 28000 APK at 86 RPM Main, boiler: NDSM-Babcock "Marine Radiant" steam boiler.
Max. steam output of 100 tons/hour, normal steam output 85 tons/hour.
The launch of the stern took place from slope 2/3 on April 27th, 1968. The bow followed from the same slope on August 24th1968 at 12 noon.
The christening was, after uniting the fore and aft parts, on September 30th, 1968 on Board performed by Mrs J.M. Keyzer-Loeb, wife of his
Excellency, the State Secretary of transport, public works and Water management that the champagne bottle on the chimney (!) did.
The transfer was on 21-1-1969. The flower girl was for this occasion Hansje Autumn, daughter of the head design bureau, later to
become the Director of new construction.
 
"Melania" was built in Amsterdam in 2 parts, like other VLCC tankers, built at the NDSM yard.
