Reconditioning of 223,805-dwt ore/ oil carrier
Cause of damage:
Explosion followed by fire
Outline of damage:
Nos. 1 and 2 hatch covers were blasted off, the outside shells and longitudinal bulkheads opened wide on both
sides and partly expose craters, the transverse bulkhead fell down, and the deck plates bulged, telling of the
awful explosion.
Outline of repair:
Damaged parts were removed according to the damage report, including the fore part which was repaired on the
ground. New hull structure for the midship section was erected. The bow part which had sustained partial damage,
was reconditioned and fitted to the new hull. Some 4,300 tons of steel was used for the repair work.
Work period:
120 days, from July through Novemeber, 1974.
