Keel laid 11-03-1944. Launched 17-06-1944. Completed 28-06-1944. Gr. 10296 t., Net. 6236 t., Dw. 16613 t. L.o.a. 159,57 m., Br. 20,78 m., Dr. 9,31 m. Engine: 2 steam turbines, manufactured by Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company, Pittsburgh. 7240 B.h.p., 5401 kW. Speed 15 knots. 26 Tanks.
History:
ESSO MEMPHIS-1944 completed for Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, Wilmington, Delaware, USA.
ESSO MEMPHIS-1950 for Esso Shipping Company, Wilmington, Delaware, USA.
ESSO MEMPHIS-1955 Returned to the Maritime Commission, 6 October, (trade-in program) for lay up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet, Wilmington, N.C.
MEMPHIS-1956 Acquired by the US Navy from the Maritime Commission, 28 November.
T-AO-162 MEMPHIS-1956 Assigned to the Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS), 23 December, as USNS Memphis (T-AO-162) operated under a general agency agreement by Marine Transport Lines, Inc., New York.
T-AO-162 MEMPHIS-1957 Placed out of service, struck from the Naval Register, and returned to the Maritime Administration for lay up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet, James River, Lee Hall, VA., 13 September.
MEMPHIS-1966 Converted to a floating power plant at Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Co., Newport News, VA.
MEMPHIS-1966 Transferred to the US Army, 28 May, refitted for service as floating power plant - stationed at Qu Nhon, Vietnam.
