Esso Trenton (II) / TS Chicopee (A0-34)

The 520 -Foot, 10,097 - ton tanker Esso Trenton was built in 1941 by the Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., Chester, Pennsylvania, for Standard Oil of New Jersey, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York.
    Named after the river in Massachusetts as Chicopee, and commissioned on February 9, 1942, under Cdr. Graeme Bannerman, USNR. Earned one battle star for Salerno under Cdr. Buell F. Brant, USNR, where they delivered fresh water and 50,748 barrels of fuel to the British - flag Tankers, Ltd., tanker Scottish American and 6,960 barrels of Diesel to a lighter and arrived back in the United States on September 21, 1945, after refueling destroyers en route. Earned three battle stars for Leyte, Luzon, and Okinawa under Cdr. Charlie O. Peak, USNR. Decommissioned on February 14, 1946, at Mare Island and returned to Standard Oil.
    In 1947 the company changed the name to Esso Chattanooga, homeported at Wilmington, Delaware, call sign WTKA.
    Registered in 1954 hy the Esso Shipping Co., Inc., 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, as the
10,096 - ton tanker Esso Chattanooga, homeported at Wilmington, Delaware, call sign WTKA.
    Registered in 1959 by the Esso Standard Oil Co.,15W. 51st St., New York, as the 10,096 - ton tanker Esso Chattanooga, call sign WTKA.
    Registered in 1960 by the Humble Oil & Refining Co., 15 W. 51st St., New York, as the 10,096 - ton tanker Esso Chattanooga, homeported at Wilmington, Delaware, call sign WTKA.
Between September 1962 and May 1963 Beauregard, Inc., 100 W. 10th St., Wilmington, Delaware, converted the 15 - knot ship to carry 476 containers, of which 56 were temperature controlled, and registered the ship in 1963 as the 16,401 - ton container ship San Francisco, call sign WTKA.
    Registered in 1967 by the Litton Industries Leasing Corp, 100 W. 10th St., Wilmington, Delaware, as the 16,401 - ton freighter San Framcisco, call sign WTKA. Operated by Sea-Land Services, Inc.
    Registered in 1975 by the Reynolds Leasing Corp., 100 W. 10th St., Wilmington, Delaware, as the 16,401 - ton freighter San Francisco, call sign WTKA.
    Scrapped in 1978.
