under Maritime Commission contract (MCE hull 1903), at California Shipbuilding Co., Wilmington, CA.
Launched, 2 November 1943
Commissioned, USS Caribou (IX-114), 25 November 1943, at San Pedro, CA., LCDR. A. J. Nall in
command During World War II USS Caribou was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.
USS Caribou pumped more than 70 million gallons of fuel to some 850 ships during her brief US Navy career
Decommissioned, 3 May 1946, at Norfolk, VA.
Transferred to the War Shipping Administration at Lee Hall VA. for disposal, 6 May 1946, name reverted to SS Nathaniel B. Palmer
Struck from the Naval Register, date unknown Commercial Service Sold to Palmer Shipping Corp., 2 June 1948
Converted to a dry cargo ship at Newport News Shipbuilding Corp., Newport News, VA. in 1951
Resold in May 1952, name retained Ran aground in November 1952 off Buenos Aires, Argentina, while underway
in ballast, refloated and repaired Resold to London Salvage Association in December 1952, reflagged United Kingdom Resold in 1962,
renamed SS Manolito, flag unknown Renamed SS Manegina in November 1962
Final Disposition, scrapped at Savona, Italy USS Caribou earned one battle star for World War II service
