Launched, 7 January 1939
Commissioned USS Cimarron (AO-22), 20 March 1939
Decommissioned and struck from the Naval Register in October 1968
Final Disposition, scrapped, at San Jose, CA. in 1969

LAUNCH FIRST SHIP IN MARITIME BOARD PROGRAM

Chester, PA., --  The tanker Cimarron sliding down the ways here, Jan 7th. The Cimarron, first of 52 ships in the Maritime Baord's  Program for the year, has been sold to the Navy along with a sistership to be launched later.

The US Navy tanker USS Cimarron (AO 22), a twin screw turbine vessel of the T3-S2-A1 type.
Delivered in February 1939 she was the first completion in the Maritime Commission's long
range Builting programme, being USMC hull No 2. The ship is shown closing in at speed to
commence a refuelling job at sea during the war.

after taking part in the Tokyo Raid with the Hornet (CV-8) and Enterprise (CV-6) in April and the Battle of the Coral Sea in
early May with Lexington (CV-2), Yorktown (CV-5), Hornet and Enterprise, to defeat the Japanese at Midway at the end of
May-early June, and finally, taking part in operations in the Solomon Islands and Guadalcanal. The destroyer berthed to
starboard of Cimarron is Worden (DD-352) with the stern of the heavy cruiser Chicago (CA-29) visable just forward of
Worden. On the opposite side of the pier, across for Worden, is the destroyer Dewey (DD-349). Across the river at Mare
Island Naval Station, in the ferry slip, is either the harbor ferry Delta King (YFB-55) or Delta Queen (YFB-56).
