DAMAGE REPAIRS ON THE ESSO DEMETIA.
The picture above shows the Esso Demetia the morning after it was attacked by Iranian speedboats (The Bridge, August 1988).
You can see how one fire monitor is still spray ing water. The damage to the Esso Demetia was repaired in Singapore, together with
planned maintenance and special survey nr. 3. Major repair items were the partial retubing of a boiler superheater, anode instal-
lation in the clean ballast tanks, and the partial recoating of the tanks. Also some severe problems with the diesel generator
were encountered. It turned out, though, that the repair would take too long, so it was decided to rent a Caterpillar generator
installed temporarily on the aft main deck.
"Esso Demetia", getting up to speed, having just dropped people off at Suez. The convoy, the "Esso Demetia" was in
the previous night, had one of the American nuclear powered aircraft carriers leading - aiming for the first war in Iraq.
That carrier had been doing 30+ knots to get to Port Said, for that convoy.
