Among the Indians of Massachusetts, the name Sachem applied to the supreme ruler of a territory inhabited
by a certain number of tribes. He was thus a chief of chiefs.
Under government requisition, Sachem served in transatlantic convoys to the UK and the Mediterranean from 1943
to 1944.
From 1945 until the end of the war, she operated in India, Australia and the Pacific Islands. She was returned to
Socony-Vacuum in November 1945 at Portland, Maine.
