"Mobil Vanguard (I)";
LOA 735'; Beam 104' 5"; Draught 39'; 50,285 DWT
Built 1963 by Bremer Vulkan, Bremen, Germany, for Mobil Tankers Company (Liberia) Limited, this vessel was a sister
ship to Egmont, Mobil Valiant, Mobil Vigilant and Tasso. She was powered by a Brown Boveri turbine developing 18,000HP.
Sold to South African interests in 1967 and renamed Thorland, the vessel was subject to a violent explosion on 9 June 1970
in which 9 men were killed. Later taken in tow she broke in two off the Mozambique coast and the bow section sank, the
stern being beached at Porto Amelia. The aft section was subsequently joined to the forward section of another vessel,
Wafra (built 1953), to form a tanker of  51.924 DWT, named Achillet.
She was scrapped in 1976 at Kaohsiung.
