Mobilgas
LOA 501 '7", Beam 68', Depth 37', 15,515DWT, 131,195 bbls
De Laval turbines, cross-compound, double reduction gears, developing 4000SHP at 75RPM 13.2 knots
Launched 30 January and commissioned 7 February 1937 at Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company, Chester, Pennsylvania.
MOBILGAS rode with and against the Gulf Stream, in cargo and ballast, up and down the east coast of the US, until these waters turned vicious with German U-boats during the early months of 1942. MOBILGAS survived the onslaught and was requisitioned for War duty by WSA in April 1942.
Under government control she at first sweated out transatlantic convoys loaded with Navy fuel or aviation gas. Later she lifted war cargoes out of Aruba, Netherlands Antilles, for Australia and New Guinea, following General McArthur as he hopped from island to island and finally returned to the Philippines.
MOBILGAS was one of the five vessels of the pre-war fleet which came home in triumph. She was returned to Socony-Vacuum in November 1945, reconditioned, and placed once more in coastal service. In early 1954 her immediate future was undetermined.
