On board photos "Leon Falk Jr., ex. "Winter Hill" ( Part-1 )
( Photos thanks to Greg Hayden, ex sailer on the Leon Falk Jr. )
He wrote to me :
Attached is the July 20, 1961 christening brochure produced by the owner Hanna Mining Company for the T2-SE-A1 Leon Falk Jr, ex- Winter Hill. It is greasy since the C/E handed it to me when I stepped out of the ER with greasy hands. I have kept it in an envelope since.

Also I include a 20 image contact sheet of pictures I took on board November 1961, as well as other pertinent images. All of these are available in larger sizes.

I began with Hanna at age 19 in 1960 as a Coalpasser on the 1911 built, 2500 HP Triple Expansion with a pair of coal hand fired three furnace Scotch boilers, Edmund W. Mudge. 1960 was the last year the Mudge and two other vessels sailed and were laid up so I joined the Falk with the rest of the crew in July 1961 at Beth Shipyard Key Highway Yard in Baltimore.

We sailed the ship up the US East Coast stopping in Sept Isles for an iron ore cargo, which we hauled down the St. Lawrence Seaway to Cleveland. After we discharged our cargo at C & P Ore Dock we shifted over to East Ninth Street Pier for the Thursday July 20 Media Event and Official Christening but then lay for Open House through Sunday.

Coming out of the boiler room on the starboard side I swung open the heavy insulated steel door -- and caught a visitor right between her very ample bosoms and pinned her to the opposite bulkhead in the narrow passageway. I conveyed my apologies -- offered a personal ship tour -- and she became my companion that weekend.

Main Shaft Thrust Bearing in a brand new coat of primer. The white spots are where two of these
Polaroid pictures were in a stack and stuck together.
Both turbo generators.
Main cargo pump, motor behind. # 2 Cargo Pump. The original electric motor driven cargo pumps were
retained and used to manage ballast water in the new German built mid body ballast tanks. However the
gas proof bulkhead that was between the pump and engine rooms at this level was removed, access
was from the engine room side.
Looking down on the Main Unit, Butterworth Manifold on the bulkhead.
Fire Room Boiler Combustion Control Board. I believe it was a Hagan
board, but it might have been a Bailey?
Auxiliary generator switch board
Outboard turbo generator set.
Fuel oil transfer pump.
Antique Diesel Emergency Generator mounted in the upper engine room at
Engineers Deck Level, ie: poop deck.
